Grid interconnection of PV systems is accomplished through the inverter, which converts dc power generated from PV modules to ac power used for power supply to electric equipments. Solar inverter system is therefore very important for grid connected PV systems.
Grid-interactive solar PV inverters must satisfy the technical requirements of PV energy penetration posed by various country's rules and guidelines. Grid-connected PV systems enable consumers to contribute unused or excess electricity to the utility grid while using less power from the grid.
String inverters are the most common option for grid-interfaced solar PV systems. String inverters have one centralized inverter connecting a series or “string” of solar panels, as depicted in Fig. 5 (b). This configuration has the advantage of a simple structure like that of a central inverter and AC module inverter with high energy output.
With the additional possibility of energy storage via batteries, hybrid string inverters provide a good outlet to maximize the power utilization of the string input, and also provide an alternate pathway to supply the grid during night or low irradiation scenarios.
In the optimized string inverter system individual units called Optimizers responsible for DC Power extraction is installed under each Solar Module or pair of Solar Modules. The DC optimizers are connected in series to form DC Strings.
